What does it mean to use creativity in education?

Creativity is way of thinking that creates new insights, novel approaches, fresh perspectives, new ways of understanding and conceiving original ideas. Creativity in education is essential in improving the knowledge base of each individual. For without creativity, new inventions or technologies would have never been created or discovered.

How is creativity used in education at CHHS?

There are many different ways CHHS expresses signs of creativity.  During patient rounds on the floors, doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and students discuss the well being of the patients which includes thinking outside the box with the care of the patient.

Ideas come to light with healing and comforting the patient and families. In Child Life, specialty painting specialist come and help children express their inner thoughts about their stay here at Children’s Hospital. New locations within Children’s Hospital are now experiencing nursing clinical groups, areas under utilized for what they offer to the student. For the first time in a long time, senior nursing students are able to experience a clinical in the operating room setting. Most often, we think of using pain medication to resolve people’s pain, but others thought outside the box and have used music therapy or massage therapy to alleviate people’s pain.

What are the key principles that evidence supports about creativity in education?

There are three key principles in creativity in education: encouraging, identifying, and fostering.
Evidence has shown that success breeds success. If people are encouraged to use their creative talents, confidence and self-esteem will be built which fosters success in people. Identifying the creative skills noticed within a person’s ability is key for every organization. Finally, fostering creativity will lead to an environment of creativity. Learning is a process of discovery, and evidence has shown that educators who adopt a creative approach to teaching are more likely to deliver content and create a learning environment that develops higher order thinking skills. Skills relevant to creativity are also useful in coping with life’s challenges.

Creative thinking is a critical life skill.
